Tianmen Mountain Travel Guide
Zhangjiajie, Hunan·Nature & Scenery
A natural gateway in the mountain, cliffside walks and panoramic views — plan a rewarding day above Zhangjiajie city.
Why Visit Tianmen Mountain?
Tianmen Cave is the mountain’s signature sight: a natural opening framed by sheer rock. Higher up, forest paths and cliffside viewpoints offer changing perspectives on the surrounding mountains.
Choose this visit for mountain scenery and photography, with walking adapted to your comfort. Tianmen Mountain is a separate scenic area from the sandstone pillar forests of Wulingyuan; give each its own time rather than combining them into a rushed day.

Cableways & Mountain Escalators
Cableways & Mountain Escalators
Mountain access depends on the ticket route. On a C-route visit, the express cableway reaches the cave area and upper escalators connect it to the summit. Confirm the exact transport on your date; the longer city cableway is not assumed.

Tianmen Cave & the 999 Steps
Tianmen Cave & the 999 Steps
View the natural arch from the square and choose a comfortable way to approach it. The stairway is steep; an escalator alternative, where available, has its own access and ticket arrangements. Leave time for photos without committing everyone to the full staircase.

Cliffside & Glass Walkways
Cliffside & Glass Walkways
Follow the summit paths for different perspectives on the surrounding mountains. Glass sections are optional to discuss when planning, not an obligation for every traveler. Confirm which sections are open and arrange a suitable alternative for anyone uncomfortable with heights.
How to Visit
C-Route Example: Reach the Cave
Meet at the confirmed entrance and take the express cableway to the cave area. The reserved time slot and any transfer from the city should be arranged first.
Summit Paths & Viewpoints
Use the upper escalators to reach the summit, then choose cliff paths and viewpoints suited to the group. Include time for rests and any optional glass sections.
Return via the Cave Area
Return by the confirmed escalator and express-cableway arrangement. Allow time for queues, the trip back to your hotel and any onward travel.
Plan Your Visit
Opening & Entry
Enter in your reserved slot. Ticket sales, entry cutoffs and cableway operation may follow different times; check them before setting out.
Getting There
Travel from Zhangjiajie city to the entrance specified on your ticket. The city cableway station and mountain gate are different places; allow for transfers and queues.
What to Wear
Wear grippy walking shoes and bring a light extra layer. Pack rain protection and water; choose clothing for mountain conditions rather than only city temperatures.
Accessibility
Cableways and escalators reduce some climbing, but steps and cliffside walking remain. Check the exact route before bringing a wheelchair or stroller, and ask about avoiding glass sections if preferred.
Season suggestion: April–October. Check mountain weather and visibility before choosing a date; winter visits need a separate check of open paths and transport.
Tickets, reservations & practical notes
Reserve with the traveler’s own valid document and bring it for entry. Confirm the route, time slot and which cableway, escalator and glass-walkway items your ticket covers.
Plan for a day with walking and standing. The 999-step stairway is steep; discuss escalator alternatives and rest stops in advance.
Glass sections and outdoor paths can close with weather or maintenance. Tour tickets, transfers and guiding inclusions remain specific to your confirmed itinerary.
